Position Summary:

Working as an independent contractor from home, the High School Astronomy Assessment Writer will work with the Curriculum Development team to enhance computer-based assessments in a high school Astronomy course. Effective communication with the Project Managers and other Curriculum Development team members is essential. Candidates with experience developing large-scale educational assessments or assessment questions are encouraged to apply. Additionally, candidates with background knowledge and expertise in online learning, Section 508 standards and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), and learning management platforms are encouraged to apply.


  • Evaluate computer-based assessments and questions for alignment to lesson objectives, state science standards, and Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy
  • Add material to existing assessments by writing equivalent new questions, revising existing questions, and utilizing item bank resources
  • Ensure that question contents are accurate as well as consistent with principles of quality educational assessment design
  • Work with Project Managers and the Curriculum Development team to maintain a comprehensive and consistent system of assessment
  • Other duties as assigned

These contractual positions are temporary and are usually paid per piece. These positions will be home-based and may be part-time or full-time.

  • Experience teaching and delivering online instructional material
  • Prior content/assessment development experience
  • Degree in education (post-secondary degree a plus), or equivalent expertise in assessment or educational measurement
  • Content expertise in Astronomy
  • Ability to positively receive constructive feedback in order to improve the quality of work
  • Ability to follow explicit instructions consistently, but also to exercise good judgment when making work-related decisions
  • Must work well in an environment that requires flexibility and creativity
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and follow-through skills 
  • Ability to effectively meet deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Detail Oriented
  • Technologically proficient (especially with Microsoft Office programs)
  • Must be able to work effectively as part of a team and independently
