Job Description

The PCAOB has a full-time, regular position for a Research Analyst in the Office of Economic and Risk Analysis (ERA). ERA is responsible for conducting the PCAOB’s economic analysis, research, risk assessments and other data analysis in support of the entire range of PCAOB activities, including standard-setting, inspection, enforcement and other oversight activities.  The office applies a variety of academic disciplines and quantitative and non-quantitative approaches.  ERA also plays a lead role in the PCAOB’s efforts to identify and analyze audit and financial reporting risks and trends to inform the PCAOB’s oversight activities, including its inspection program.

The Research Analyst will assist economists with the collection, organization, and econometric analysis of financial and non-financial information to inform PCAOB standard-setting initiatives, post-implementation reviews, and other ERA initiatives. The individual will analyze the results of the data and write reports emphasizing key conclusions. The Research Analyst will report to the Director and Chief Economist. This position requires strong data management, programming, and analytical skills and a willingness to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. The Research Analyst will gain broad exposure to a number of on-going research efforts within ERA.

The Research Analyst will work at the PCAOB’s Washington, DC headquarters.


  • Collect, clean, maintain, update and document quantitative and qualitative data;
  • Assist staff in conducting financial and statistical analyses of data;
  • Analyze, verify, and develop econometric models using internal and external PCAOB data;
  • Explore new techniques for examining, collecting, and visualizing data including, but not limited to, textual analysis and natural language processing;
  • Ensure data quality through review and validation with source material;
  • Conduct research using subscription database services, proprietary data, financial filings, and the internet;
  • Write up results of data analysis in clearly written documents that emphasize the main results.


  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, statistics, finance, computer science, data science or related field; Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree with 1-2 years of experience preferred;
  • Expertise in at least one statistical package (SAS, STATA, R) and familiarity with Python or SQL;
  • Experience working with different data types (text, numeric, etc.) and cleaning unstructured data into structured form;
  • Familiarity with financial statements preferred;
  • Excellent data management skills;
  • Excellent oral communication skills, ability to understand and explain the results of data analyses to technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Strong writing skills and ability to structure results in a report in a clear and concise manner;
  • Excellent time management, organization and prioritization skills;
  • Ability to multi-task, work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
  • Must be detail-oriented and have a professional, positive and proactive attitude.
