Job Description Summary

The PCAOB has a full-time, regular position for a Research Analyst in the Office of Economic and Risk Analysis (ERA). ERA is responsible for conducting the PCAOB’s economic analysis, research, risk assessments and other data analysis in support of the entire range of PCAOB activities, including standard-setting, inspection, enforcement and other oversight activities.  The office applies a variety of academic disciplines and quantitative and non-quantitative approaches.  ERA also plays a lead role in the PCAOB’s efforts to identify and analyze audit and financial reporting risks and trends to inform the PCAOB’s oversight activities, including its risk-based inspection program.

The Research Analyst will work on projects that involve cutting edge textual data processing and analysis and assist post-implementation review economists in evaluating the overall impact of recent changes to the auditor’s report. The Research Analyst will report to the Deputy Director and Chief Economist, Research, Economic Tools, and Data. This position requires experience or interest in text parsing, sharp coding skills, strong data management skills and a willingness to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

The Research Analyst will work at the PCAOB’s Washington, DC headquarters.


  • Collect, process, maintain, update, and document textual data from sources such as the Securities and Exchange Commission EDGAR database;
  • Build on existing textual data processing work (HTML parsing and Machine Learning based) by updating and improving programs;
  • Become familiar with relevant machine learning models to improve textual data processing and classifications;
  • Assist post-implementation review economists in conducting financial and statistical analyses of data.          




  • BA in computer science or a similar field;
  • Minimum of 2 plus years of experience and/or equivalent training/education;
  • Expertise in at least the following languages: Python, R, C#, and Java;
  • Experience or interest in textual data parsing and classifying;
  • Familiarity with financial statements is preferred;
  • Excellent data management skills;
  • Excellent time management, organization and prioritization skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to multi-task, work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
  • Must be detail-oriented and have a professional, positive and proactive attitude.
