Description POSITION TITLE: Medical Scribe
LEVEL/FLSA: 7, Non-exempt

GENERAL SUMMARY: Scribes shadow resident physicians and attending physicians and complete all documentation tasks through real time, on-site medical transcription. Also responsible for ensuring thoroughness of medical documentation, coordination and integration of medical tests/labs/imaging/medical records for ready access of the physicians.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Functions of the Job:
 Provides “Real time” transcription of medical record and verification of E/M coding. Ensures medical documentation is complete according to physician ’95 coding guidelines and keeps chart deficiencies to less than 5%
 Lab/Radiology/Medical Records Retrieval: Notifies physicians of pertinent information in patient’s past medical record and ensure timely review of all laboratory and radiology results by notifying physicians when results are returned. Ensures timely transmission and review of outside medical records by obtaining patient consent for release of external medical records and obtaining them from outside facilities, as needed.
 Assists the physician with communicating their patient care plans with other physicians, nurses and patient care technicians.
 Introduces new and off-service physicians to the basic functionality of the medical records software, including documentation of patient encounter, medical decision-making, order entry and disposition.
 Performs other tasks as assigned.
Requirements REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):
Education:
 Bachelor's Degree or relevant UVA Emergency Medicine scribing experience and scribe training
 Significant college-level coursework in pre-med related courses (i.e. biology, chemistry, physics)
Experience:
 Real-time medical transcriptionist scribe experience
Knowledge and skills:
 Fluency in medical terminology preferred
 Working knowledge of physician evaluation and management billing levels preferred
 Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel)
 Electronic medical record entry experience preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS: Fast-paced clinical department with potential exposure to a variety of hazardous materials. This position will be required to provide continuous medical scribing/transcription which are continuous repetitive motion.
