POSITION TITLE: Continuous Improvement Coach
LEVEL/FLSA: 12, Exempt
REPORTS TO: Manager, Continuous Improvement


GENERAL SUMMARY: Facilitates innovative and sustainable cultural transformation, focusing on continuous improvement and operational excellence to provide value to our customers. Under the guidance of the Continuous Improvement Manager, the Coach will analyze a variety of business problems, will lead and facilitate the execution of process improvement projects in a manner that is meaningful and measurable.
The incumbent will utilize lean methodologies and leverage collaborative relationships with business partners and subject matter experts within UPG, the entire UVA Health System across grounds, and with external vendors as necessary.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Functions of the Job:

• Responsibilities and duties include, and are not limited to: Process Improvement, Business Analysis, and Project Management.
• Conducts Kaizen events and other lean activities. Develops process and value stream maps utilized to support business partners in identifying waste in a process.
• Drives process improvements using lean principles and tools such as 5S, standard work, visual management, and PDCA problem solving. Facilitates the implementation of the organization’s continuous improvement and lean transformation system in alignment with strategic initiatives and objectives.
• Develops documentation for standardized operating procedures and policies for a variety of business processes.
• Monitors and analyzes existing and new processes for improvement opportunities in safety, quality, delivery, and cost. Utilizes A3 problem solving methodologies to address identified opportunities.
• Provides high-quality customer service through courteous and professional communication. Supports and maintains effective relationships by means of consistent and timely follow-up.
• Assists in the analysis of schedules, performance metrics, and results regarding the impact and sustainability of lean improvement (e.g. waste reduction, ROI).
• Serves as a change facilitator, develops and collaborates with other Lean champions, and influences leadership in the transformation to, and support of, a culture of continuous improvement.
• Provides project management and/or works with project managers on project initiation, planning, execution, closeout, and support. Responsible for providing requirements, specifications, communication, training, risk management, budget preparation, and vendor management for successful implementation.

Lean Coaching and Training:

• Assists in development of lean training content, documents, materials, courses, and exercises for UPG.
• Provides lean training to all levels of the organization.
• Assesses, coaches, and provides constructive feedback to teams and individuals to strengthen lean competencies.


Requirements REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):
Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent (4 years of relevant experience).

License/Certification: Lean certification preferred


Experience: Prior experience with continuous improvement in transactional, university, or healthcare environment.

Prior experience with process analysis, design, implementation, and improvement in a manufacturing or service environment.

Knowledge and Skills:
• Demonstrated ability to work in team and individual environments.
• Written and verbal communication skills are clear, professional, and able to adjust to appropriate audience.
• Ability to deliver organized and engaging presentations with detailed message to the audience.
• Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to influence and motivate others.
• Ability to facilitate group discussions that encourage collaboration, seek diverse opinions, and challenge participants to consider various approaches/solutions.
• Strong problem solving skills and successful ‘outcome-based’ thinking. Utilize critical thinking, quantitative methods, and conduct root cause analysis to solve complex problems.
• Disciplined, data-driven approach to decision making.
• Strong value stream mapping, problem solving, continuous improvement skills and experience.
• Attention to detail and ability to handle multiple projects and tasks on time sensitive schedules.
• Demonstrated ability to learn quickly.
• Demonstrated experience with Lean, Kaizen, and A3 Problem Solving.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No formal supervisory responsibility, but will coach teams during improvement projects.

WORKING CONDITIONS: General office environment.
